Hastings eliminates host team Columbus

COLUMBUS – Hastings Five Points Bank used a little luck along with timely hitting on Sunday afternoon to eliminate the host team, Columbus Bank, 8-7 in a back-and-forth contest on Sunday afternoon.

After seeing Hastings jump out to an early 1-0 advantage in the top of the first, Columbus would answer with four runs of their own, thanks in large part to a three-run home run off the bat of Tyler Vrba.

It wouldn’t take long for Hastings to pull back even as each of its first five batters in the top of the second, plating three runs in the frame. Hastings would take the lead in the third as third baseman Darin Dice connected with an RBI double.

After seeing the score jump to 6-5 in favor of Hastings, Columbus would even the tally back at 6-all on a two-out RBI double from Vrba. Vrba would advance to third on a throwing error, but be left stranded.

In the ninth, Hastings scored twice, thanks to a two-run double by Taylor Bush. Bush wold take the mound in the bottom of the ninth, but would eventually be relieved by Jon LaMaster. LaMaster, who got the win in Hastings victory over Fremont just yesterday, would notch a save by stranding runners on first and second in the Columbus ninth.

Hastings advances to play in yet another elimination round game tomorrow, against an opponent to be determined. Columbus finishes their season at 22-16.
