Associated Fire advances on pitching and power

Box Score

COLUMBUS – On the strength of two home runs and a solid pitching performance, Associated Fire (Papillion LaVista South) took a 6-4 victory over P.I. Midwest (Creighton Prep) on Saturday night in the second round of the American Legion State Tournament – National Division.

A pair of early bombs gave Associated Fire the early lead. Justin Paul clubbed a two-run shot, his second home run of the tournament, in the second inning. Not to be outdone, Beau Suponchick followed with his own shot, a solo job, in the third.

After scoring a fourth run in the fifth inning, Associated Fire would take P.I. Midwest’s best shot in the top of the sixth. The Prepsters put together four runs on three hits, including Michael Pritchard’s two-run double, to make the game even at four-all.

Associated fire would not be deterred, as they countered with the final two runs of the contest in the bottom of the seventh, scoring on an RBI groundout and a wild pitch. P.I. Midwest would rally in the 8th, getting the bases loaded with two away. However, relief pitcher Mark Lukowski enduced a groundball to get out of the jam, and earn his first win of the tourney.

Associated Fire will take on PrimeTime (Millard South) at 7 PM Sunday in a game matching the two remaining undefeated squads in the tourney. PI Midwest will take on Lincoln Pinnacle Bank (Southwest) in an elimination game at 1 PM Sunday afternoon.
