Associated Fire Advances to Title Tilt

Box Score

COLUMBUS – Associated Fire (PLV South) took care of business on Monday night, much like they have all weekend, dispatching of Lincoln Pinnacle Bank (Southwest) by a score of 8-5. Associated Fire will now take on the PrimeTime Patriots of Millard South on Tuesday evening, and will need to win just one of two games to take home a state title.

Associated Fire drew first blood, scoring on an Albert Johnson RBI groundout in the second. Associated would then add a second run in the third, thanks to Beau Suponchick’s leadoff home run.

Pinnacle Bank would bring the margin back to a single run in the top of the fourth, as Tanner Lubach scampered home on a double-play ball off the bat of Elliot Engle.

Associated Fire recovered the run in the fifth, as Suponchick was driven home on a single by Caleb Palensky. Pinnacle Bank would again answer in the top of the sixth, as Elliot Engle would race home on consecutive wild pitches after his double to left-center.

The first turning point in the game came in the bottom of the sixth, as Gavin Friehauf took the mound with his pitch total approaching the magic number of 100. Friehauf would allow two, two-run home runs in the inning, one to Justin Paul (his third of the tourney), and a second of the game to Suponchick. Friehauf would leave the game at the end of the inning, and would go on to take the loss, allowing seven runs, all earned.

Pinnacle Bank would rally back for one final push in the top of the eighth inning, as Daniel Suiter came to the plate with the bases loaded, one out, and trailing 7-5. Suiter would stroke a solid shot up the middle, only to see it turned into a 4-6-3 double play, allowing Associated Fire to escape the threat unscathed.

Ethan Schroeder, who induced the double play, and pitched a scoreless ninth, earned the save for Associated Fire.

Pinnacle Bank finishes their season with a 28-13 record.
