Associated Fire blasts past First State Bank

COLUMBUS – Two big innings propelled Associated Fire (Papillion-LaVista South) to a 12-2 first-round victory over First State Bank of Fremont in the first round of the 2010 State American Legion “National Division” Tournament on Friday.

After playing to a 1-1 tie through 6 ½ innings, Associated Fire rattled of 11 runs in the next two innings, by way of 11 hits, highlighted by a Tyler Goldberry lead-off home run in the eighth inning. Matt Milz picked up the win in relief of starter Albert Johnson. Milz also contributed offensively, as his two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth ended the game by way of the ten-run rule.

First State Bank took an early lead in the game, thanks to a Kasey Gaughen RBI single, plating Dillon McQuistan. Michael Hahn took the loss for the Fremont squad, giving up four earned runs in 6 1/3 innings pitched.

Associated Fire advances to the second round, and will play the winner of the Creighton Prep/Hastings matchup at 7 PM on Saturday night. First State Bank of Fremont will play the loser of the Prep/Hastings game at 1 PM on Saturday afternoon.
